2016/2017 Season Review

Mixed

Despite numerous replacements throughout the season due to injuries to regular squad players, the Mixed 1 team battled doggedly and managed to maintain their Division 2 status for another season thanks largely to a thumping 8-1 defeat of Southwell. Six different men played for the team during the season and six different ladies including Izzie Patterson-Watts who put in a fabulous showing against a very strong Chilwell side, taking one rubber and just missing out on another in a close best of three match.

Mens

It was a season of two halves for the Mens 3 team. Entering the season on an 8 game losing streak from the two previous seasons they started off badly with defeats to Experian and David Lloyd Aspley. However,   better times were ahead at the start of the new year and a run of four consecutive victories catapulted the team into second place in the division and with it promotion to Division 4 next season. Well done guys! A special mention should also be made to junior Jacob Bates who not only broke through into the senior club but also ended the season with a 100% win record!

The drama that befell the Mens 1 team is the stuff of club legend. Like the Mixed team, the squad was ravaged with injuries to regular players and a glut of very capable substitutes were called upon, including junior Matthew Kingsbury who acquitted himself with great credit in his debut against a very strong Rolls Royce side. In spite of some outstanding performances against the likes of Boots and Chilwell for example, results did not fairly reflect the teams position in the division and it was left languishing at the foot of the table with just one decisive match against Beeston Valley to settle the relegation battle. With East Leake requiring nothing less than an unlikely 7-2 victory it seemed that relegation was indeed looming for the team. However, a series of heroic performances saw the team at 7-0 up with just the 2 rubbers to be played. As both teams at that point were exactly matched in terms of points and rubbers, one more rubber would ensure survival for East Leake in the division...unfortunately the team were unable to secure either of the two remaining rubbers and so an agonising 3 week wait ensued until the Notts Badminton Association could calculate the seasons points for and against totals for both teams. We are delighted to report that the Mens 1 team appear to have maintained their status in Division 2A. Now that's what is called a 'close shave'!

Having been relegated to Division 4b the previous season, hopes were high for an immediate return to Division 3 for the Mens 2 team. The season proved to be a mixed bag with some excellent victories against Arboretum, St Giles and Rushcliffe Arena but defeat to a strong Beeston Fields side as well as narrow defeats to Carlton and Forest. A 50:50 record easily secured the teams continuation in the same division  but with some close matches and the formation of potential strong partnerships there is renewed optimism for promotion next season.
