2017/2018 Season Review
Mixed
An excellent season characterised by the successful
formation of new partnerships and a fantastic second place finish in
the division. Stalwarts Gill Rogerson and Adrian Mateo continued as the
established pair and maintained their usual consistency, but
the real revelations were the new partnerships
of Alice Garcia-Melgares & Andy Longton and Pen Sutton
& Craig Parkin whose superb performances ensured the team
achieved a well deserved promotion.
Mens
The Mens 1 team had to endure an exceptionally tough start,
kicking off their campaign with matches against the two teams that
would eventually finish in first and second place respectively
i.e. Bingham
and Rolls Royce. Despite a heavy loss to Rolls
Royce, the match was notable for the debut of ex-junior player Jacob
Bates who acquitted himself very well. The
following matches saw a significant change in fortune with
victories in all the remaining fixtures cementing third place spot in
the division, the highest finish in the past five years.
After an unexpected promotion the previous season, the Mens 2
team knew that staying in Division 3 would be a
tough task, but its main aim was to be competitive and this
was
achieved...and some! The season opener was a close fought
match
away at Unity that resulted in a narrow 5-4 defeat, despite matching
Unity point for point. This was followed
by another 5-4
defeat with an overall difference of just 10 points and then a further
two successive losses in yet more close matches. The first win
eventually came in a 6-3 win against Boots but the
final
match of the season would determine whether or not the team would
remain in the division or be relegated. With the match all
square
at 4-4 one more rubber was all that stood between the team and survival
but alas it was not to be and yet another close 5-4 defeat ultimately
sealed relegation.
The Mens 3 team cemented their position in Division 4 finishing in an
excellent fourth place. Notable highlights were a sweeping 9-0 victory
against Safari and the debuts of ex-juniors Will
Caltrop-Owen
and Dan Oakley who won 80% of their rubbers playing as a pair.
Remarkably, there was a difference of just six points more for the
teams opponents over the course of the whole season.
Nottinghamshire
Cup
After
a ten year absence, the knock-out cup was reintroduced this year. East
Leake entered a team and after a first round bye found
itself in
the quarter finals against long time friendly rivals Beeston
Valley. A magnificent 6-3 victory set up a semi-final
match
against the mighty Bingham but despite the handicapping
advantage, Bingham proved too strong and regrettably there was
no
repeat of the Clubs historic appearance in the 2008 final.
